Beckham's Career Timeline

December, 1974: A future footballer performs his first free kick in his mother’s womb.

May 2, 1975: Ted and Sheila Beckham welcome their second child, David Robert Joseph, into the world in Leytonstone, England.

May 2, 1989: Beckham signs his “schoolboy forms” with Manchester United on his 14th birthday,

July 8, 1991: Beckham becomes an official trainee with Manchester, fulfilling a boyhood dream while still a boy.

1992: Beckham helps Manchester United’s youth club win the FA Youth Cup. Later the same year, he enters his first League Cup game as a Manchester substitute. Much to his chagrin, it would be another two years before he saw more action in the Champions League.

January 8, 1993: Becks signs his first professional contract at the tender age of 17.

1995: Beckham makes his first appearance in team league play while on loan for five games to Preston. Later that year, he makes his Premiership League debut with Manchester United.

1996: It was a very good year for young Beckham. He scores seven goals in 33 games for Manchester and plays a significant role in the team’s FA Cup win. He also scores one of his most famous goals—kicked all the way from midfield--against Wimbledon.

1997: Kudos galore for Becks as the midfielder wins PFA Young Player of the Year as United takes the Premiership title to boot.

1998: Controversy at the World Cup; Beckham sits out the first two games when the coach finds him “unfocussed.” When he does get in the game against Argentina, Becks gets a red card for a retaliatory kick against. England burns him in effigy and blames him for the team’s early exit.

1999: Beckham helps United win the “treble.” England forgives him, and he is named captain of the England national team the following year.

2001: In one of his most memorable performances, Beckham demonstrates his ability to “bend it” when his free kick results in a win over the Greek team, qualifying England for the World Cup.

June, 2002: England blows its chance to take the World Cup after Brazil takes Captain Becks’ team down.

2003: Manchester United’s coach kicks a football boot at Beckham, smacking him in the head. Beckham is soon shipped off to Real Madrid in Spain for a $41,000,000 transfer fee.

2004 to present: Beckham has middling success on the field for Real Madrid, but he is a T-shirt-selling machine. The sting of criticism isn’t half as bad as it was in England, mainly because he understands very little Spanish.

June, 2005: Becks opens his Californian Academy for soccer playing children.
